Processes that nobody does by hand anymore

Projects from logistics, security services, finance and a Pilates studio, each with the starting point, what was built and the result. The write-ups describe what was actually delivered. Where the client prefers it, the project is shown anonymized.

German Copters

Logistics provider for hospitals and laboratories

Calculating road distances for quotes automatically

Starting point
A logistics provider had to determine the driving distance between locations for every quote. It was done by hand: look it up, copy it over, keep calculating. Slow, error-prone and hard to trace afterwards.
What was built
A tool links the TARIS tariff data with the OpenRouteService routing service and calculates the distances automatically. The result feeds straight into the existing calculation.
Result
Distances are available at the push of a button, on one consistent basis for every quote. The calculation is documented and traceable at any time.
Technology
TARIS tariff data, OpenRouteService (routing API), integration with the existing calculation

In the client's words

“We used to look up the road distance for every single quote by hand. Today it's available at the push of a button, on one consistent basis. Tim looked closely at how we actually work and built a solution that fits right into our existing calculation.”

Pilates studio in Schaffhausen, Switzerland

Class and membership tracking in Excel that grows with the studio

Related service

Starting point
The owner of a Pilates studio had built her own booking and membership spreadsheet. As the client base grew, it got unwieldy: formulas stopped calculating reliably, and old bookings had to be moved to an archive by hand to keep the memberships correct.
What was built
The workbook was rebuilt around the way the studio already works. Attended classes are counted automatically, memberships extend themselves during the studio's holidays, and open spots are visible at a glance. Questions that came up in day-to-day use were worked in step by step.
Result
The owner still works in Excel, but without the manual upkeep: classes, membership periods and open spots are always current and easy to trace.
Technology
Excel workbook with automated class and membership tracking, tailored to the existing routine

In the client's words

“I had originally built the spreadsheet myself. As my Pilates studio grew and the number of clients went up, it became more and more extensive and confusing. At some point the formulas stopped working properly, and I had to move old bookings into the archive by hand so the memberships would be calculated correctly. Today the spreadsheet counts the attended classes automatically, extends the memberships on its own while I'm on holiday, and shows me at a glance where there are still open spots. Tim quickly understood how my studio works and what I needed from the spreadsheet. He listened to what I wanted and implemented every follow-up request patiently and reliably. I'm very happy with the result and can absolutely recommend Tim.”

Legacy Protective

Security services provider

Quote calculation as a web application

Starting point
At a security services company, quotes were calculated in an Excel file that grew more complex with every deal. Several people needed access, and versions drifted apart.
What was built
The calculation logic was moved into a lean web application with central data storage. Built in short iterations and tested with real quotes from day-to-day business.
Result
The client now runs the application independently. Quotes are produced on one shared data basis and are fully traceable.
Technology
Custom web application with database, handed over for independent operation

Innovative Financial Solutions

Financial services firm

Analyses and reports for a financial services firm

Starting point
Figures were analyzed manually against the client's criteria and transferred into reports. The workflow was slow and depended on a few individuals.
What was built
A tool automates the analysis against the client's criteria and generates reports in a fixed format. The analysis logic remains the client's property and is not described here.
Result
Recurring reports are produced consistently and with far less manual work.
Technology
Automated analysis and report generation; technical details withheld at the client's request
